Faulkner's triumph at Royal Portrush in 1951, the only time the championship has been played in Ireland, was to prove the only British success until Tony Jacklin entered the record books 18 years later in 1969. More

The US Open 1970
While American players were busy bashing a fledgling Hazeltine National in 1970, Tony Jacklin of Great Britain was feeling right at home. He shot four subpar rounds to win the U.S. Open by seven strokes.

It was the first time a  golfer from the UK had won since 1920 - a long, long 50 years.

His margin of victory was the greatest in Open competition since 1921 and stood until Tiger Woods won by 15 shots at Pebble beach in 2000, in fact he was the first since Tony to go wire to wire... More
