The Ryder Cup -
"The First Match"
Around 1920, Walter Hagen and a few
of his contemporaries made the annual journey to Britain for the
Open Championship. It was in between the qualifying and the Championship
proper that "Sir Walter Hagen rallied around and arranged
some friendly matches between his colleagues from both sides of
the Atlantic.
This spawned the idea of the Ryder Cup.
Walter Hagen and Ted Ray captained the
first teams, although Abe Mitchell, who was Samuel Ryder's teacher
and friend(depicted on top of the Trophy) was the first choice
for the Great Britain and Ireland Team. Sadly he was unable to
travel because of illness.

"Father &
Son"
At the beginning of the new Millennium,
I thought it appropriate to honor the only father and son to
have won a major championship. Old Tom Morris and Tom Jr remain
the only father and son to have won the Open Championship, the
former winning the Championship Belt in 1861, ' 62, '64, and
'67, when he was already age 40. Tom Morris Jr. won the belt
outright by winning three times in succession in 1868, '69, and
'70. There was no contest in 1871 while new arrangements w ere
being discussed. The first Open Championship proper for the Challenge
Cup as we know it today was played in 1872. This was again won
by young Tom. He was to die in 1875, following the tragic death
of his youngwife at the age of 24, much lamented as the finest
golfer of his day.
Tony's signature is inlaid
into this exquisite piece.

"The Swilcan
Burn"
This Picture highlights the Swilcan Burn, which wasn't always
the well defined hazard it is today. Before the first Open Championship
was played at St. Andrews, parts of the burn, with it sandy edges,
cut almost to the middle of the first fairway. This burn was
where the local women did there laundry. Having washed and bleached
there bed linen, they laid them on the fairways and "whin"
bushes to dry.
The R&A made numerous attempts at "local
rules" to address the problem. Then , in 1851, a new rule
came into effect saying that "when a ball lies on clothes
or within one clubs length of a washing tub, the clothes may
be drawn from under the ball and the tub removed. In the late
1880's, the rule was changed to read "When a ball lies on
clothes the ball may be lifted and dropped behind with no penalty".
It was a source of relief for all golfers when a new public laundry
was built just opposite the harbor!

piece.
